We have seen these lies before. They are word for word copied from the Soviet Union disinformation campaign against Israel and the west after the 1967 and 1972 wars. They also called Israel genocidal nazis. And Yasssr Arafat was a Soviet product.

Operation SIG was a far-reaching Soviet disinformation campaign orchestrated by the KGB to incite anti-Israeli and anti-Zionist sentiment globally, particularly within the Arab and Islamic world. The campaign's core strategy involved maliciously equating Zionism with Nazism and accusing Israel of committing genocide against Palestinians. This narrative, a form of historical inversion, was designed to portray Jews as the new oppressors, mirroring the very crimes they had suffered during the Holocaust.

A key source detailing this operation is Ion Mihai Pacepa's book, Disinformation, where the former Romanian spy chief recounts how KGB chairman Yuri Andropov explained the goal of slandering Israel by portraying its leaders as "genocidal Nazis." This claim was then amplified through various propaganda channels, including fabricated documents and articles. The Mitrokhin Archive, a collection of KGB files smuggled out by defector Vasili Mitrokhin, independently corroborates these accounts, providing further evidence of the Soviet Union's systematic use of disinformation to achieve its foreign policy goals.

Academic studies, such as those by Eli Cohen and Elizabeth Boyd in their paper "The KGB and Anti-Israel Propaganda Operations," have further analyzed Operation SIG, identifying it as a highly successful example of Soviet active measures that has had a lasting impact on global discourse. The campaign's legacy is evident in the persistent use of these malicious tropes, demonstrating how a state-sponsored disinformation effort can manipulate public opinion and incite hatred for decades.

Thanks for this helpful article, which of course is 100% correct. We have to defend against the charge of genocide, even though doing so dignifies the offensive lie. But I am not satisfied with this argument in itself if it results in us winning the genocide argument but accepting that Israel is merely committing crimes against humanity and war crimes. As has been explained and detailed by many independent war scholars, we are fighting a just war, and fighting it in a just way, in accordance with the principles of necessity, proportionality and discrimination of the laws of armed conflict. Defending ourselves against the Genocide claim is insufficient. Staying on the right side of the laws of armed conflict is going to be critical in this next phase of the war, and we must not cross this line in Gaza City. It's a huge part of our legitimacy.
